Fixed Bridges

A fixed bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring a replacement to the teeth on either side of the gap.

A bridge fills a gap using the teeth beside it for support. The neighbouring teeth are prepared and crowned, and the replacement tooth is joined between them. It is fixed in place — it does not come out.

What it involves accepting

A bridge requires cutting down the teeth on both sides of the gap, including healthy ones. That is the significant trade-off against an implant, which leaves them alone. A bridge is usually quicker and less expensive, and it remains a sound choice — particularly where those neighbouring teeth already need crowning for their own reasons.

Looking after one

  • Cleaning underneath the replacement tooth is essential and needs a threader, an interdental brush or a water flosser
  • The supporting teeth can still decay where the crowns meet the gum
  • Regular check-ups matter more, not less, once you have a bridge
